Korea will own the world’s first floating city by 2025

The idea of a floating city has long been featured in sci-fi movies, but is about to become a reality in Busan, South Korea, where UN-backed scientists are building a floating city. The world’s first model. The project is called OCEANIX, was announced last year, and now we have new design images of this floating city.

The photos show that the interconnected floating platforms will cover a total of about 62,700 square meters, with enough space for 12,000 people.

Construction of the floating city is estimated at $200 million and will be completed in 2025.

Philipp Hofmann, CEO of OCEANIX said: “We are on track to open OCEANIX Busan and demonstrate that floating infrastructure can create new ground for coastal cities that are looking for sustainable ways to expand living areas. oceans, and at the same time adapt to sea level rise.”

The project aims to help people living in coastal areas, communities at risk of being wiped out in the context of rising sea levels due to global warming. According to OCEANIX, 2 out of 5 people in the world live 100 km from the coast, and every year floods force millions of people from their homes.

Bjarke Ingels, founder and creative director of BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group, one of the project’s lead architects, said: “OCEANIX Beach City will be a prototype for other sustainable cities. We believe that OCEANIX’s floating platforms can be developed at scale to serve as the foundation for future communities in coastal locations most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.”

The floating city will be placed on a beautiful blue lagoon, with bridges connecting everywhere with each other. The city is divided into different zones – including living areas, research areas and accommodation. Buildings on the floating city will have a low-rise design.

According to OCEANIX, all buildings built in the city will be built under seven stories to create a low center of gravity and not be affected much by wind.

Summers in Busan are often hot and humid, so the roof maximizes shaded areas inside, providing comfort and reducing cooling costs while still using as much space as possible. roof to collect solar energy.

In the first time, the city will focus on developing space for 12,000 residents and visitors. However, in the future, the city could be expanded to accommodate more than 100,000 people.

Each floating building will be hexagonal and contain a coating that is two to three times harder than concrete. The underwater space could be used to grow seafood or kelp, while fish waste could be used to fertilize plants.

OCEANIX said, people will have to live with a “predominantly plant-based diet”which will reduce the need for space, energy and water resources.

Each neighborhood will treat and replenish its own water, reduce and recycle resources, and provide innovative urban agriculture.

Construction of the floating city, estimated to cost $200 million, will begin with a “historic agreement” signed by the city of Busan, UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlement Program) and other stakeholders designed by OCEANIX in New York.

The new design images come shortly after a report released by the European Commission warned that global sea levels are rising 3mm a year. This is a state of the ocean report produced by the Copernican Maritime Authority, using a combination of satellites, measurements at different locations in the world’s oceans, and a combination of computer models.

Experts found that warming oceans and melting land ice have caused sea levels to rise by 3mm a year, higher than at any point in the last century. That is why floating buildings are becoming the focus of future development.
