111 West 57th Street, also known as Steinway Tower, is a super-tall residential skyscraper in New York City. Located on the so-called “billionaire district” in Midtown Manhattan, the tower, designed by SHoP Architects, reached its monstrous height in 2018 and has a height-to-width ratio of 24:1, making it the The thinnest skyscraper in the world. The tower’s project was announced in 2013 and broke ground the following year, but construction was actually stalled in 2017 for financial reasons. According to SHoP, the tower is built of the world’s highest strength concrete.

For comparison, Burj Khalifa is 45 meters wide, while 432 Park Avenue in New York is 28.5 meters wide, and 111 West 57th Street is a modest 17.5 meters. The height-to-width ratio is 24:1, which means it is considered the world’s thinnest super-tall skyscraper. Dana Getman, associate director at SHoP Architects, principal designer, argues that this slim figure is not a new paradigm of New York. This design shape is a throwback to the classic era of skyscrapers. “It’s an interesting thing in design,” she said. “Before the war, before air conditioning, buildings tended to be thinner to give people closer access to light and air.”

The tower contains only one apartment per floor, plus 14 in the Steinway Hall building and 46 in the tower, bringing the total number of apartments here to 60. The shape of this building will taper towards the flat edge at the top. Its east and west facades are clad in terracotta tiles with bronze accents. SHoP architects integrated terracotta elements into the tower’s façade, each terracotta panel being individually molded, fired and hand-glazed. While the walls facing Central Park to the north and Lower Manhattan to the south are made of premium tempered glass. The interior of each apartment is made by Studio Sofield. In addition, each apartment in the building has a 25-meter swimming pool, as well as other luxurious amenities including a private dining room and sports room.

The model apartment on the 43rd floor is the first completed apartment of the project. Stretching the width of the tower, the full-floor apartment has 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, followed by direct elevator access. The ceilings are 14 meters high and the views are wide open to Central Park. “Inspired by New York’s finest apartments, the interiors of the apartments will be combined with the public spaces of Steinway Hall, presenting a contextual design characterized by a thoughtful approach unique in terms of function and power of composition,” said company leader Bill Sofield. At around $30 million, the 43rd-floor mansion includes a formal entrance gallery with white stone floors. , an open plan kitchen with unique cabinets and Gazenau appliances, a corner room with two walk-in closets, and a unique polished nickel bath and separate shower.

“111 West 57th Street is a project of extraordinary proportions and monumental grandeur to the scale of the tower, which rises elegantly alongside other famous structures. Any difficulty. What our team encounters about skyscrapers or New York City developments are transformed into opportunities to do something that has never been done before. As New Yorkers, we extremely proud to be able to build a new icon for our city,” shared Gregg Pasquarelli, director at SHoP Architects,

The look of 111 West 57th Street has been carefully considered and the entire design team has a role to play in ensuring the integrity of these finishes throughout the building’s useful life. A building as thin as 111 West 57th Street needs to be structurally rigid and strong to withstand wind and seismic events. WSP achieved the required strength with two shear walls running the height of the east and west elevations of the building. This leaves the other zones completely open, so that residents can enjoy unobstructed views of Central Park to the north and Midtown and downtown Manhattan to the south.

There are also “Landmark Residences” penthouses located in the Steinway Hall building. Facilities at 111 West 57th include a 25-metre swimming pool with separate saunas, a fitness center with a mezzanine terrace, private dining room, lounge, 24-hour service access 24 as well as a 24/7 concierge service.
