In the midst of boiling water, China surprised when it entered the water, allowing the iPhone assembly factory to operate in the middle of the epidemic

The factory of Foxconn Technology Group in central China – the largest iPhone assembler for Apple Inc., – has decided to continue operating amid a government blockade of the area because of Covid-19. The government made concessions and so the factory was able to allow key employees to continue working.

According to a notice circulated by Bloomberg, officials have sealed off the Zhengzhou Airport Economic Zone. This is where Foxconn’s factory is located to assemble, so the smartphone has the logo of a half-bitten apple. The notice said that people are not allowed to leave their homes unless necessary during the blockade, but workers of key businesses can go to work with permits.

The blockade is part of the Chinese government’s relentless campaign called Zero Covid.

“The Zhengzhou facility is still operating normally and it continues to comply with government measures to limit the spread of the virus,” Foxconn said in a statement Sunday.

Zhengzhou Airport Economic Zone did not immediately respond to requests for comment outside of business hours.

Flights carrying passengers and cargo to and from the central Chinese city are operating normally, Zhengzhou airport said in an announcement on its official WeChat account on Saturday. Foxconn relies on this airport to ship iPhones to other countries.

Apple’s suppliers in China have been affected to varying degrees due to China’s pursuit of the Zero Covid policy. However, these impacts are not too great because this is usually the low season and demand for consumer electronics is at its lowest.

Foxconn’s smaller rival, Pegatron Corp. suspended operations at its iPhone factories in Shanghai and Kunshan. Quanta Computer Inc., the maker of Apple laptops, recently resumed some production after halting work for a few days in Shanghai. In mid-April, Zhengzhou sealed off Foxconn factory areas. However, this move does not affect the factory.

China continues to grapple with the spread of the virus despite taking strict measures. Shanghai recorded the highest number of daily Covid-19 deaths in the current outbreak. Beijing also warned of the possibility of more cases in the coming days.
