How many people own a smartphone in 2022?

In 2022, the number of global smartphone users is estimated to reach 6.6 billion, marking a 4.9% year-on-year increase. This estimate is more than the number of smartphone users in 2016 of 2.9 billion, a 79% increase.

The number of smartphone users in different economies is not uniform

The number of smartphone users is quite disproportionate in its distribution across different economies. It is predicted that smartphone ownership rates are significantly higher in advanced economies including most of Europe and the US, Australia, South Korea and Japan.

An average of 76% of adults in these countries report that they own a smartphone, with the highest usage coming from South Korea, where nearly every adult (95%) is a smartphone user. smartphone use.

However, in emerging economies, smartphone use is down significantly. This is especially true in Latin American and African countries. In these markets, only 45% of adults own a smartphone, the lowest is India with less than a quarter of adults reported owning a smartphone. One of the biggest factors leading to low usage in emerging economies is their high poverty rates, which keep many people from being able to afford smartphones.
