Initially, the photos were of no known origin, although the colors of the text messages suggest they were taken on Elon Musk’s phone.
In a text exchange that went viral on social media, Elon Musk asked Bill Gates: “Do you still hold a short position of half a billion dollars with Tesla?“
Gates replied: “Sorry to say I haven’t stopped doing it. I would like to discuss the possibilities of philanthropy“.
Musk shot back: “Sorry, I can’t take your philanthropy on climate change seriously when you take a stand against Tesla, the company that is doing its best to tackle climate change.“.
A short position is when an investor has sold an asset that he or she does not own in anticipation that the asset will decline in price in the future. Investors can make a profit by selling at a high price and buying back at a lower price.
In response to a question from the Whole Mars Catalog account, Elon Musk confirmed the photos were real, but he did not reveal them. He added that they must have received it through many friends.
It’s unclear when the chat took place, but Musk said on Joe Rogan’s podcast in February 2021 that he heard Bill Gates was betting against Tesla on the stock market.
Immediately after commenting on the messages on the evening of April 22, Elon Musk also did not forget to tweet a meme comparing the Microsoft founder to the emoji of a pregnant man and wrote: “In case you need it. rapid fat loss”.
Elon Musk and Bill Gates, two of the richest people in the world, have openly disagreed in the past on topics like electric cars, Covid-19 and the colonization of Mars.
Tesla and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation did not respond to Insider’s request for comment.
