I have been a Samsung TV fan for years.
I’ve not explored other smart TVs in the market.
It seems while I was preoccupied with my favourite TV brand, the smart TV market has been transforming itself.
With consumers becoming aware of 4K televisions and streaming services, it’s clear that the next generation of TVs is gaining acceptance.
With more streaming content available 4K displays are becoming the norm.
Super Thin TV
Then I got to try out the Hisense 65-Inch 4K ULED Smart U7A TV over the December holidays thanks to Hisense (our first smart TV review).
The Hisense 65-Inch 4K ULED Smart U7A TV was the flagship device of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia.
4K TVs are getting cheaper than ever, and Chinese brand Hisense is among the least expensive.
This 163cm TV unit is, in fact, super thin despite being a big TV.
Currently, it is priced at R17, 999 giving you a R2, 000 discount at Incredible Connection.
The Hisense 65-Inch 4K ULED Smart U7A TV can be seen as a testament to the company’s dedication to manufacturing quality devices.
The unit has an ultra-thin panel for most of the design and increases in size towards the bottom only to accommodate internals and speaker bar.
This TV panel offers a bezel-less finish.
The TV screen is surrounded by a majority metal frame, along with a metallic stand, with the rear covered in plastic.
The metal frame gives the TV a nice premium look and feel.
The honest truth is that this TV is good looking for its price. If you are updating from an older TV, this unit is like going from a VW Citi Golf to a BMW 1 Series.
The silver TV stand is very clean and compliments the minimalistic look of the device.
There are also three USB ports (one 2.0 and one 3.0), a Freeview HD tuner, a generic satellite tuner, an optical digital input, and a CI (Common Interface) slot. Finally, there’s an Ethernet port and earphone jack.
It has 4 HDMI ports and the first two HDMI ports are HDMI 2.0 enabled, which carries 4K@60Hz signal with HDCP version 2.2. HDMI 2 also supports ARC. The Hisense 65-Inch 4K ULED Smart U7A TV has a built-in Wi-Fi, which is DLNA compliant supporting Anyview.
Strangely, this device doesn’t support Bluetooth.
I used the Hisense 65-Inch 4K ULED Smart U7A TV primarily for video-on-demand content, such as Netflix, ShowMax and DStv Now.
Thanks to the VIDAA smart TV operating platform – which comes loaded with Netflix, DStv Now, ShowMax, YouTube, IcFlix, Vewd App Store, Yupp TV, Golf TV, etc – I could enjoy a variety of content on this unit. This is great as it means you can easily get your favourite content from tons of online resources.
The game mode setting enables the TV to deliver games, such as Fortnite and Minecraft, at full speed and showing no signs of screen tearing during fast-paced gameplay.
To play games, I used the Sparkfox Android Cross-Platform Triple Mode Smart Wireless Controller. My tech-savvy son was also able to use the TV IR remote control to play Fortnite and Minecraft without being coached at all.
The remote has a Netflix, YouTube and Media Content button. I hope soon Hisense will include direct access buttons for DStv Now and ShowMax.
The IR remote and the VIDAA smart TV operating platform makes it fast and easy to navigate and provide quick access to the apps.
I also tested the compatibility of our MECOOL Android TV Box and was impressed with how easy it was to sync it with the Hisense 65-Inch 4K ULED Smart U7A TV.
The remote of the Hisense 65-Inch 4K ULED Smart U7A TV also has a sport mode, which enables you to switch to the desired viewing experience that perfectly matches the sports game no matter the picture quality or the sound, making you feel like you are in the stadium.
Unfortunately, the sport mode didn’t work with SuperSport’s channels.
That said at its best, the Hisense 65-Inch 4K ULED Smart U7A TV presents images that are dynamic and colour rich.
The 4K image clarity is excellent. Watching Bird Box series on Netflix exhibited copious details.
Furthermore, the units sound system can be considered great but we connected our own soundbar to amplify the sound.
The unit sounds as loud even when the volume was low.
Finally, the Hisense 65-Inch 4K ULED Smart U7A TV is pitted against bigger brands – Samsung, Sony and LG.
Sadly, this device doesn’t have AI-powered voice controls but was able to interact with the TV through the RemoteNow App.
That said, the biggest selling point for the Hisense 65-Inch 4K ULED Smart U7A TV is its polished, minimalist design, plus the razor-sharp 4K imagery.
The VIDAA smart TV operating platform is also great as it offers all the key streaming services in one area.
I was also impressed by its game setting and crisp 4K content on Netflix and ShowMax.
In short, Hisense is redefining itself and seeking to be the best tv for the mass market without compromising on quality.
It’s a modern looking TV that’s slim enough to take its rightful place in your beautiful living room.
