Samsung’s Leader 8 Is The Smart Flip Phone Your Razr Aching Heart May Jones For

Like many people back in the day, I owned a Motorola Razr flip phone and thought that device was the coolest phone ever made at the time. I particularly miss being able to flip that thing shut when the person calling me was annoying, it was almost as fulfilling as slamming the receiver down back in the corded phone days.

Samsung has a new smartphone that will make fans of those old-school flip phones smile called the Leader 8, and it just launched in China. The Leader 8 has two displays with one on the front, outside of the device and another tucked away inside the phone above the keypad. Speaking of the keypad, it has physical buttons and reminds us a lot of the keypad inside that Razr.

While the design may remind you of phones from another era, inside the Leader 8 is a modern device with decent hardware. The inner and external displays are both 4.2-inches wide and have a 1080×1920 resolution. Both are Super AMOLEDs and support 16 million colors. The SoC is a Snapdragon 821 running at 2.15 GHz. It’s not the most powerful processor available, but it should get the job done.

Samsung gives the Leader 8 a 12MP main camera with F1.7 aperture and autofocus. The front camera is a 5MP unit with a F1.9 aperture. That main camera can record 4K video at 3840 x 2160 resolution and 30fps. The chipset is paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. A microSD card slot allows for expansion up to 256GB. The device is a dual SIM card smartphone, but if you use a memory card to expand storage you give up one of the SIM slots.

Other features include USB 2.0 support, Bluetooth, GPS, Glonass, Beidou, and Galileo location support. A microUSB is used for connecting headphones, presumably via an adapter. Power is via a 2,300 mAh internal battery good for about 68 hours of standby on 4G TDD LTE networks. A fingerprint scanner is on the back of the device. Wireless charging is supported via an accessory charger. The OS is Android, but it’s not clear which version Samsung uses on the Leader 8. If you are excited about this device, there is no word on it being offered outside of China.

Most of the Samsung talk of late has been focused on the rumored Galaxy Note 8 expected to land later this month.
