The OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T will not be getting Android P or any Android version beyond that. Via a Q&A posted on its forums, OnePlus has confirmed that both smartphones will not be updated beyond Android O. The OnePlus 2 met a similar fate a few weeks ago when it was announced that the phone will not getting the Nougat update.
While the door is firmly closed on future OS updates, OnePlus does say that the OnePlus 3 and 3T will continue to get security updates for the “foreseeable future”. The company also announced that it will be shifting its open beta program to the recently launched OnePlus 5 once Android O is released for the OnePlus 3 and 3T. This is good news for OnePlus 5 users who wish to experiment with the latest Android features before they are released to the public.
OnePlus’s head of product, Oliver Z said – “Android O is going to be the last Android version update we’ll release for the OP3/3T. We’ll continue to release security patch updates for the foreseeable future, and offer support for individual application updates. After the OP3/3T have been updated to Android O, we’ll start moving the Open Beta Program from OP3/3T to OP5.”

While the OnePlus 3 is fairly old at this point (in terms of smartphone shelf-life at least), the OnePlus 3T is just nine months old and many buyers will be a little miffed at this news. Even with Android O, the OnePlus 3T will receive just a little over a year of support, which is not much. Buyers of the OnePlus 3T probably would have liked at least two years of software support.
During the Q&A, OnePlus also announced that it plans to push the August security patches to the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T very soon. A month or two after these patches go live, the company will release Oxygen OS 4.5 to both the smartphones.
OnePlus recently released the OnePlus 5 which comes with a dual-camera setup at the rear, a slimmer and lighter design and top of the line specifications. The smartphone comes with a Snapdragon 835 processor, 6/8GB of RAM, a 3,300mAh battery, a 5.5-inch FullHD display and 64/128GB of internal storage. OnePlus 5 owners will now be wondering whether their smartphones will be updated to Android P and beyond.
