The Bixby digital assistant, introduced to Samsung Galaxy smartphones earlier this year, works through a dedicated button on the handset. But some owners have found the button annoying and would prefer to disable it.
Now, thanks to a new update, they can – sort of. Owners of Samsung’s top-of-the-range Galaxy S8, S8 Plus and Note 8 smartphones now have more options for the new Bixby button on the side of the case.
The button that opens Bixby can now be partially deactivated after a software update, the German tech website “Teltarif.de” reports. You can now select the option “Don’t open anything” at the bottom of the Bixby settings menu.
This prevents the Bixby home screen from being opened when the button is pressed briefly. Many users have apparently had to deal with this issue on a regular basis when pulling the smartphone of their pockets, for instance.
However, pressing the key for a long time will still activate the Bixby voice feature. It can’t be completely turned off and it’s also not possible to assign other functions to the button.
To install the Bixby software update, you will need a Samsung user account to log in to the Galaxy Apps store and get the update under “My Applications.” — dpa
