What Bowman brings to Michigan
Austin Meek, Michigan beat writer: Bowman’s transfer changes Michigan’s quarterback picture dramatically. He was arguably the top quarterback available in the transfer portal and could start immediately. With more than 5,200 passing yards and 33 touchdowns in three years at Texas Tech, he brings significantly more experience than Michigan’s other two options, third-year player Cade McNamara (one career start) and incoming freshman J.J. McCarthy.
What this means for the program
Meek: Joe Milton’s decision to transfer left Michigan shorthanded at quarterback. McNamara showed flashes of promise in 2020 and McCarthy is the highest-rated high school QB to sign with the Wolverines during Jim Harbaugh’s tenure, but neither was a sure thing heading into 2021. Bowman gives the Wolverines an experienced option and could help Michigan bridge the gap until McCarthy is ready to take the reins.
Assessing the 2021 QB competition
Nick Baumgardner, Michigan senior writer: Michigan opened spring ball last week just days after Milton announced his intent to transfer. From a numbers standpoint, Bowman gives Michigan more depth behind McNamara and McCarthy. I don’t think it should be viewed as a given that Bowman wins this job, though he’ll certainly be allowed to compete for it.
Michigan also has Dan Villari on scholarship, but at least now has a QB with extended experience on the roster. It’ll be interesting to see how it shakes out for Harbaugh — who welcomes another transfer QB.
