DECKERVILLE — A village-wide fiber internet project is underway in this community that should provide high speed broadband service to residents and businesses this fall.

Agri-Valley Services is installing fiberoptic cable throughout Deckerville, the latest project in Sanilac County for the Pigeon-based communications company.

Construction crews arrived last week to begin installing the underground infrastructure. The fiber-boring operation is being handled by subcontractor Gene Clancy and Sons of Port Austin with the assistance by AVS’s sister company, Pigeon Telephone.

Deckerville is the second town in Sanilac County where AVS is currently building a fiberoptic community.

Crews from Clancy and Son have been working on the infrastructure in Sandusky since spring. The project is being completed in phases around the city, and could take up to three years before its finished.

AVS has already completed fiber-optic projects in Worth Township, the village of Peck, the Buel Hill manufactured home park in Buel Township and the M-25 corridor north of Lexington.

The Deckerville project should only take a couple months complete, according to Richard Kuhn, a spokesperson for AVS.

“Deckerville is small enough of a community that (unlike Sandusky) does not require phases,” said Kuhn. “Work will happen concurrently throughout the village.

“Our goal is to have construction completed by late October. At that time, we’ll begin connecting residents to our service.”

Kuhn explained, “The benefits of a FiberNet Community in Deckerville will not only provide high speed internet to homes or businesses, but will open opportunities for the community to bring businesses back to the area, allow students to study using the internet at home, open opportunities for tele-medicine patient care, and allow residents to have home monitoring devices.”
