Free-to-play MOBA Battlerite is getting a battle royale mode, which will be out this summer. The new mode, appropriately dubbed ‘Battlerite Royale’, throws up to 20 players into a free-for-all deathmatch on a map 20 times the size of the regular game’s arena.

Battlerite Royale seems like it will have the same basic gameplay of the main game, with an isometric camera, top-down WASD controls, a reliance on skill and map awareness, and having different champions to choose from who all play differently. To this developers Stunlock will add the classic royale gameplay, such as hunting for items, fighting other players to steal their stuff, and being the last one standing at the end of a ten-minute match.
Johan Ilves, Marketing Director at Stunlock Studios, explains why they want to mesh the MOBA and battle royale genres together: “We want to give players the excitement of a Diablo-esque exploration experience combined with the character variation of a MOBA and the thrill of a survival game. That said, I think anyone who’s looking for a fresh and different take on the Battle Royale genre will have a blast.”
It’s certainly not the first game to jump on the immense success of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite. GTA Online introduced a battle royale mode late last year, Paladins will be getting one soon, and both Call of Duty and Battlefield are rumoured to be doing something similar for their next games – and in COD’s case they’re reportedly dropping the single-player campaign to do it.
