Apple is preparing a whole slew of upgrades this fall, if analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is correct, which he nearly always is. Expect upgrades for Apple’s entire product lineup, save for the iPod. ( Pixabay )
Apple is reportedly going to introduce upgrades across its entire product lineup this fall, including ones that haven’t seen refreshes in quite a few years.
The rumor comes from trusted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who says that there are refreshes due for iPhone, iPad, Mac mini, MacBook Pro, iMac, and Apple Watch. Really, the only thing missing from this roster is the iPod touch, although Apple has clearly given up on its standalone music players.
Much of what Kuo speculates has been mentioned before, but the Mac mini refresh is news to many, as Apple hasn’t updated that device in over three and a half years. He provides a nice overview of what Apple has in store for its entire lineup, as Macrumors reports:
As with previous rumors, Kuo maintains that Apple will release three new iPhone models this year, two of which are OLED variants with 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch displays. The other one is a lower-cost LED model with a 6.1-inch display. Despite the display disparity, all phones are expected to feature Face ID and upgraded A12 chips. The two OLED models will have dual cameras, but the LED model will only get a single lens.
Two new iPad models are in development, says Kuo, in 11-inch and 12.9-inch variants. Much like the iPhone X, they’ll come with a full-screen design, which if true would be a radical change from previous iPads. The home button will be removed entirely, with Apple expected to replace Touch ID with Face ID, as it did with the iPhone X. A notch design is expected, but Kuo didn’t confirm if this is the case.
For now, Kuo doesn’t have a lot of information regarding the upgraded Mac mini, but he says fans should expect a processor refresh at the very least. It remains unclear whether there’ll be other changes, such as the design or number of input/output ports, for example. What he can confirm is that there’s a refresh coming.
MacBook And MacBook Pro
Kuo says there’ll be new MacBook and MacBook Pro models with the latest processors. No word on the rumored ARM-powered MacBook, though.
New Low-Cost Notebook
Kuo says Apple is going to introduce a new laptop that costs much less than its more expensive siblings. He previously said this was going to be part of the MacBook Air lineup, but now he’s not so sure. There’s a chance this becomes a successor to the MacBook Air.
A performance upgrade for the iMac should be expected, says Kuo.
Two new Apple Watch models are in development this year. They will have bigger displays than the current iteration and feature upgraded heart rate sensors. It’s not clear whether the Watches themselves will be bigger because of the bigger displays, or the bezels will be thinner.
Kuo doesn’t know when Apple plans to reveal these upgrades, but its annual keynote in September could be a likely venue.
