2. Methods of teaching English to children
2.1 Let children learn English as soon as possible
As mentioned, learning English from the first years of life brings a lot of benefits to children. So let your child learn English as soon as possible. If parents do not have enough time, knowledge and skills to teach their children to learn foreign languages at home, find a reputable English class for children so that they can be better exposed to the new language.
2.2 Learning a foreign language must be persistent
Some mothers when sending their children to learn English are often impatient and want to know what their children learn today. This invisibly creates pressure on children, causing them to gradually lose interest in learning.
Learning a foreign language takes time, especially for children. Don’t put pressure on your child by constantly asking about today’s lesson. If this goes on for a long time, it will make the child more pressured, afraid and disgusted with English.
Find out for yourself what vocabulary your child’s English lesson learned today, then ask questions about that word while playing with your baby. Parents should start with a question that doesn’t require the child to answer, but can use gestures such as nodding or shaking his head, or pointing directly at an object. Then comes the more complicated question that requires speaking. Instead of asking what the child learned today, parents should give the child the opportunity to speak out about what he has learned!
2.3 Learn English in many forms
No child will like to be forced to sit at a desk and learn dry knowledge. Let your baby be exposed to new languages through many different means and tools: games, funny children’s English songs, pictures, cartoons, videos teaching English to children…
Vivid images and fun, attractive sounds will make your baby feel excited and absorb English knowledge much better!
2.4 Learning a foreign language should be right from the start
According to scientific studies, the knowledge children learn from the first years of life will be ingrained in their brains and greatly affect what children receive later. Therefore, when letting your child learn English, teach them how to pronounce correctly from the very beginning!
3. Useful experience when teaching English to children
3.1 Create a habit of thinking and processing information in English
From the very beginning, teaching English to children should create the habit of thinking and processing information heard directly in English.
Specifically, instead of asking the child “What is the English apple?” you should point to the apple and ask “What is this?”, instead of teaching red is red you should teach by asking the question “What color is it?”. At the same time, parents or teachers teach the child how to answer in English “It is ___”.
Once formed thinking in English at a young age, later on, the child will be more agile and fluent in speaking.
3.2 Is “Accent” important?
It is surprising that Vietnamese people overestimate the role of “accent”. They believe that being good at English is having to speak English – British or British – American accents. It doesn’t matter what accent you speak in English, what matters is pronunciation, rich vocabulary, concise expression, and confidence, he added.
So, if possible, let your baby get acquainted with many different “accents”: British English, American English, Australian British… so that they can communicate more confidently and increase their listening comprehension when interacting with foreigners.
3.3 Encourage reading habits: why not?
Reading is a very important habit that needs to be cultivated from a young age. Through reading, children can learn many things not only about English but also about the world around them.
In the UK, parents read to their children before going to bed. So, if possible, parents buy English stories with simple content or audio books to read or listen to before going to bed.
Thus, to be able to learn English effectively for children, parents need to be concerned about the age and surrounding environment that affect their child’s learning. Hopefully through this article, parents will have more experience in teaching their children better.
