Target’s Best Black Friday Tech Deals Last Year
Like Walmart, the best way to get an insight into Target’s Black Friday 2018 plans is the 36-page Black Friday ad it posted last year on November 6th. These were the standout deals:
- Westinghouse 55-inch Smart UHD 4K TV for $249.99 – review deal
- Microsoft Xbox One S 500GB with $25 Gift Card for $189.99 (save $90) – review deal
- urBeats Earphones for $49.99 (save $50) – review deal
- Google Home Mini with $10 Target Gift Card for $29 (save $20) – review deal
- Free $250 Gift Card with Apple iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus with Qualified Activation – review deal
- Sony PS4 1 TB Console for $199.99 (save $100) – review deal
- Apple Watch Series 3 for $329.99 (no discount) – review deal
So what can we learn from this?
What To Expect From Target’s Black Friday 2018 Sales
The beauty of Target is its a creature of habit. Consequently, last year’s deals in combination with insider tips and the next generation of new consumer tech means I expect the following deals:
- 55-inch 4K TV – $190 from an off-brand
- Microsoft Xbox One X Bundle with $25 Target Gift Card – $399.99 (save $100)
- Google Home Mini with $10 Target Gift Card – $24 (save $25)
- Free $250 Gift Card with Apple iPhone XS, Apple iPhone XS Max, or Apple iPhone XR with Qualified Activation
- Sony PS4 Pro Bundle with $25 Gift Card – $274.99 (save $125)
- Apple Watch Series 4 with $30 Gift Card – $399.99 (no discount)
Yes, Target is going to up its game from last year. Its doorbuster HDTV deal should be even better for Black Friday 2018, as will its Google Home Mini offer while the iPhone, Apple Watch and console deals will be upgraded to the latest models.
Walmart’s expected Black Friday 2018 deals may have the edge on iPhones, but these two are set for a colossal battle. Especially with Target having the edge on delivery fees (see below).
Target Black Friday 2018 Tips:
Black Friday Ad Release – Out of the major big-box stores, Target is likely to be the first to post the 2018 iteration of its Black Friday ad. Last year, this was in the middle of the night on Monday, November 6th. Expect this year’s ad to come out during the early morning hours of Monday, November 5th, which will be the first unveiling of the anticipated ‘Big Three’ Black Friday ads in Target, Best Buy, and Walmart. As usual, Target’s ad will set the tone for many prices on top electronics this year, and some of the prices will likely be repeated in Walmart and Best Buy’s ads. Expect the 2018 Target Black Friday ad to be 36 to 40 pages and include a ton of electronics. A few notable items to look out for include the Microsoft Xbox One X, the newest Apple iPhones, Google Home Mini, GoPro cameras, the Apple Watch Series 4, and an assortment of 4K TVs and home theater essentials. Target is also known to include free gift cards with many of its top doorbusters.
Sale Days and Times – Target’s in-store Black Friday sale has actually started at 6 pm on Thanksgiving in recent years, and I am expecting the same in 2018. While some retailers are opening their doors earlier on Thanksgiving, stores like Target, Best Buy, and Walmart have not given in to the pressure to open earlier. Online deals will be available the entire day on Thanksgiving and Black Friday, with many prices extending throughout the weekend into Cyber Monday. On the day of its ad release, Target has traditionally offered early access shopping for some of its Black Friday deals. Expect an event like that again on November 5th or whatever day Target ultimately releases its ad.
Free Shipping – Over the past few years, Target has offered free shipping with no minimum spend for all orders during the holiday season. Along with Best Buy, Target has the best free shipping terms among the major retailers, and I expect that trend to continue in 2018. Compared to Amazon and Walmart, Target’s free shipping deal is much better. For Amazon, non-Prime members must spend at least $25 in order to enjoy free shipping. Walmart shoppers must spend at least $35 in order to qualify for free two-day shipping.
Target Cyber Monday – Most retailers do not have official Cyber Monday ad scans anymore, but Target still has its own version of a Cyber Week ad. Last year, Target waited until Black Friday weekend to release its Cyber Week ad, and it is likely to wait until the last possible moment this year. Expect a brief Cyber Monday ad detailing only the top deals. Target traditionally offers a coupon for 15% off the entire store on Cyber Monday, so that will make Target one of the top destinations in 2018 for Cyber Monday deals.
