As concerns about the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) increase, the Fremont Fire Department wants you to know they are continuing to monitor the outbreak’s progress in close coordination with the Alameda County Public Health Department (ACPHD), and regional public health and emergency medical services personnel.
To date, there are no confirmed cases in Fremont or Alameda County. The understanding of COVID-19 is constantly developing, and as the situation evolves, seasonal flu remains a concern.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that so far this (flu) season there have been at least 29 million flu illnesses in the United States, 280,000 hospitalizations and at least 16,000 deaths from the flu.
While the immediate risk of COVID-19 to the general American public is believed to be low at this time, the CDC recommends individuals and their families practice the following every day preventive measures:
• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with 60%-95% alcohol.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
• Stay home when you are sick.
• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
• Individuals with chronic health issues and/or individuals experiencing severe symptoms should be evaluated by a medical professional.
• Consult with your healthcare provider if you or your household members are at high risk for COVID-19 complications.
• Regular use of these measures will help increase community preparedness and resilience for responding to the outbreak.
