When you think of hats, the first thing that comes to mind is the Hue region. Hat making is a traditional craft here for hundreds of years, and there are many craft villages such as Da Le, Phu Cam, and Doc So. However, Tay Ho is most famous because it is the place where the hat originated in Hue. This is a village located on the banks of Nhu Y river, 12 km from Hue city.
A hat may look simple, but the craftsman must follow 15 steps, from going into the forest to get leaves to pressing leaves, making frames, etc. Hue’s hats always have two layers of leaves. Craftsmen must be skilled to make two very thin layers. The special thing is that they add poems and paintings of Hue between the two layers, creating the famous ‘poem’ hats.
The hats made in the craft village have been passed down from generation to generation because everyone, young or old, can participate in the process. This is a famous handicraft, not only in Vietnam but all over the world.
