Welcome to “Nature and You”. Today, we asked listeners around the world who called us to express their views on these two questions:
– Are there more disasters now than in the past?
– Are we prepared to deal with natural disasters?
Sarah: I think there are more disasters now than before. Whenever I watch the news on TV, I also see places that are flooded or affected by drought. I’m sure this is a result of climate change and global warming.
Peter: I don’t think there are more disasters now than there used to be. But there is more news covered in a shorter period of time. We have seen them so often in the news that we have become accustomed to them.
Nubita: I think the recent earthquakes and tsunamis just show how unprepared we are for them. Today, despite all the technology and knowledge available, many people still fall victim to natural disasters.
Sacred: I don’t think we can prepare for natural disasters because nobody knows when and where they will strike. It is nature’s way of reminding us that we are responsible and that we should show more respect for the natural environment.
2. Task 2 Unit 9 grade 8 Communication
Read the listeners’ views on natural disasters again and decide who you agree with and who you disagree with. (Listen to the audience’s views on natural disasters again and decide whose views you agree with. Disagree with whose views.)
Guide to answer
I agree with Sarah’s view. (I agree with Sarah’s point.)
I don’t agree with Nubita’s view. (I disagree with Nubita’s point.)
3. Task 3 Unit 9 Grade 8 Communication
Answer the two questions. Express your own views and write them down below. (Answer the two questions. Express your own views and write them.)
– Are there more natural disasters now than there were in the past?
– Are we prepared to deal with natural disasters?
Guide to answer
My answer is yes. According to the World Meteorological Organization, humanity experienced five times as many natural disasters (3,496) in the first nearly decade of this century as we did during the 1980s (743). That said, the increase in the number of events isn’t as simple as it seems. I think the difficulty is keeping people aware and prepared for natural disasters. But, we still can use the technology and knowledge available to reduce risks to an acceptable level.
