Write mass measurements as decimals

### 1.1. Knowledge to remember

**For example: **Fill in the correct decimal places:

5 tons 132kg = …tons

Method: 5 tons 132kg = \(5\tfrac{132}{1000}\)tons = 5,132 tons

So: 5 tons 132kg = 5,132 tons

### 1.2. Solve textbook exercises pages 45, 46

**Lesson 1 Textbook page 45**

Fill in the correct decimal places:

a) 4 tons 562kg = …tons; b) 3 tons 14kg = …tons;

c) 12 tons 6kg =….tons; d) 500kg = …tons.

**Solution guide:**

a) 4 tons 562kg = \(4\frac{{562}}{{1000}}\) tons = 4,562 tons

b) 3 tons 14kg = \(3\frac{{14}}{{1000}}\) tons = 3,014 tons

c) 12 tons 6kg = \(12\frac{{6}}{{1000}}\) tons= 12,006 tons

d) 500kg = \(\frac{{500}}{{1000}}\) tons = 0.5 tons

Lesson 2 Textbook page 46

Write the following measurements as decimals:

a) The unit of measurement is kilogram:

2kg 50g; 45kg 23g 10kg 3g; 500g

b) The unit of measurement is weight:

2 weights 50kg ; 3 weights 3kg ; 34kg34kg ; 450 kg

*Solution guide:*

Question a:

\(\begin{array}{l}

2kg50g = 2\frac{{50}}{{1000}}kg = 2.05kg\\

45kg23g = 45\frac{{23}}{{1000}}kg = 45,023kg\\

10kg3g = 10\frac{3}{{1000}}kg = 10.003kg\\

500g = \frac{{500}}{{1000}}kg = 0.5kg

\end{array}\)

Sentence b:

2 quintals 50kg = \(2\frac{{50}}{{100}}\) quintal = 2.50 quintal = 2.5 quintal

3 quintals 3kg = \(3\frac{{3}}{{100}}\) weights = 3.03 quintals

34kg34kg =\(\frac{{34}}{{100}}\) quintal = 0.34 quintal

450 kg = 400kg + 50kg = 4 quintals 50kg = \(4\frac{{50}}{{100}}\) quintal = 4.50 quintal = 4.5 quintal

Lesson 3 Textbook page 46

There are 6 lions in the zoo. On average, one animal eats 9kg of meat per day. How many tons of meat is needed to feed that number of lions for 30 days?

*Solution guide:*

In one day 66 lions eat all the meat is:

9 × 6 = 54(kg)

In 3030 days 66 lions eat all the meat is:

54 × 30 = 1620(kg) = 1.62 tons

Answer: 1.62 tons of meat.
