About the fan chart
1.1. Knowledge to remember
a) Example 1: The figure below is a fan chart showing the percentage of books in an elementary school’s library.
Looking at the chart we know:
– 50% of the books are children’s stories;
– 25% of books are textbooks;
– 25% of books are other types of books;
b) Example 2: The sidebar chart shows the percentage of students participating in sports subjects for grade 5C. Knowing that class 5C has 32 students, how many of you participate in Swimming?
Looking at the chart, we see that 12.5% of students participate in swimming.
So the number of students participating in Swimming is:
32 x 12,5 : 100 = 4 (students).
1.2. Solve textbook exercises page 102
Lesson 1 of the textbook page 102:
The survey results on the color preferences of 120 students are shown in the fan chart below. Please indicate how many students:
a) Like blue? b) Like red?
c) Prefer white? d) Like purple?
a) 40% of students like the color blue. So the number of students who like the color blue is:
120 : 100 x 40 = 48 (students)
b) 25% of students like red. So the number of students who like red is:
120 : 100 x 25 = 30 (students)
c) 20% of students like white. So the number of students who like white is:
120 : 100 x 20 = 24 (students)
d) There are 15% of students like purple. So the number of students who like purple is:
120 : 100 x 15 = 18 (students)
Answer: a) 48 students;
b) 30 students;
c) 24 students;
d) 18 students.
