Compare numbers in the range of 10000

### 1.1. Knowledge to remember

1) Of two numbers:

• The number with fewer digits is smaller. For example: 999 < 1000.

• The number with more digits is larger. For example: 10 000 > 9999.

2) If two numbers have the same number of digits, compare each pair of digits in the same row, from left to right.

__ Example 1:__ 9000 > 8999 because in the thousands there are 9 > 8.

__ Example 2:__ 6579 < 6580 because thousands digits are all 6, hundreds digits are all 5, but in tens there are 7 < 8.

3) If two numbers have the same number of digits and each pair of digits in the same row are the same, then the two numbers are equal.

### 1.2. Solving Textbook Exercises

**Lesson 1: **Fill in the blanks with <, > or = signs

a) 1942 … 998 b) 9650 … 9651

1999 … 2000 9156 … 6951

6742 … 6722 1965 … 1956

900 + 9 … 9009 6591 … 6591

**Solution guide:**

- Calculate the value of the side with the addition operation.
- Compare:
- Numbers with fewer digits have smaller values.
- Numbers with the same number of digits compare pairs of numbers in the same row from left to right.

a) 1942 > 998 b) 9650 < 9651

1999 < 2000 9156 > 6951

6742 > 6722 1965 > 1956

900 + 9 < 9009 6591 = 6591

**Lesson 2:** Fill in the blanks with <, > or = signs:

a) 1 km … 985m b) 60 minutes … 1 hour

600 cm … 6m 50 minutes … 1 hour

797mm … 1m 70 minutes … 1 hour

__Solution guide:__

- Convert both sides to the same unit.
- Compare and then fill in the blanks with the appropriate mark.

a) 1km > 985m (because 1km = 1000m, but 1000m > 985m)

600cm = 6 m

797mm < 1m (because 1m = 1000mm, but 797mm < 1000mm)

b) 60 minutes = 1 hour

50 minutes < 1 hour

70 minutes > 1 hour

**Lesson 3:**

a) Find the largest of the numbers: 4375, 4735, 4537, 4753.

b) Find the smallest of the numbers: 6091, 6190, 6901, 6019.

__Solution guide:__

Compare pairs of digits in the same row, from left to right, and then find the number with the largest or smallest value.

a) Since 4375 < 4537 < 4735 < 4753, the largest of the given numbers is 4753.

b) Since 6019 < 6091 < 6190 < 6901, the smallest of the given numbers is 6019.
