TOPEKA, Kan (WIBW)– Shane Williams’ son has special needs that can cause him to act out and have trouble focusing in the classroom.
“While I want my kid to get an education I don’t want it to be at the cost of other kid’s education.”
Junior is autistic, which can make the classroom environment challenging.
“We had images sent to us from the principal where he had taken his shoes off and put the desks together and was running across the tops of the desk.”
William’s has high aspirations for his son, despite his learning disability.
“I want my son to be successful, for me that means he’s able to maintain himself in a normal classroom and school and work eventually.”
Williams says his son can’t do that right now, he says the school system itself is not the problem but the lack of resources is.
“I think the problem isn’t with the schools it’s the way it’s laid out for the schools. The teachers are extraordinary. I don’t know what I would have done without the teacher and the principal there.”
Williams says he feels having a child with challenges like his son has while in a traditional classroom makes the learning experience bad for both the students and the teachers.
“These kids need to have that behavioral training before they go in to a regular classroom”
He says special education programs take some of the extra weight off teachers shoulders.
“Their main focus is education not special needs and we have just overwhelmed our teachers with more than they can handle.”
Williams says because of the support from junior’s teachers and principal, his son is able to excel in the classroom.
