Orange County business owner indicted after authorities accuse him of owing IRS more than $29 million – OCRegister

An Orange County businessman accused of failing to pay the IRS more than $29 million has been indicted on a federal-tax evasion charge.

A grand jury indictment accuses Luis E. Perez of failing to pay millions in payroll taxes, penalties and interest related to funds withheld from the salaries of employees at several of his temporary-worker companies.

Perez – who federal prosecutors say has homes in Anaheim Hills, Yorba Linda and Dove Canyon – owns a variety of companies, including Checkmates Staffing, Staffaide, BaronHR and Fortress Holding Group.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Perez’s companies were required to withhold taxes from employees wages’ and to periodically pay the withheld funds to the IRS.

Instead, federal prosecutors allege, Perez “attempted to thwart the IRS’s collection efforts” by buying a variety of luxury items, including high-end cars and a boat. Prosecutors also allege he made false statements to IRS officials and left key information off of documents submitted to the agency.

Perez’s “outstanding balance” owed to the government grew to more than $29 million by Feb. 2017, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. That figure represents, prosecutors say, unpaid taxes and interest from the 2001 through 2008 tax years.

If convicted, Perez faces up to five years in federal prison.
