Learn about history, culture of sugar
Nash’s Farm Store and Humanities Washington invite the community to an engaging conversation with anthropologist Julia Harrison, a member of the 2019-2020 Humanities Washington Speakers Bureau, as she presents “Sticky Subject: The History and Culture of Sugar.” This free event takes place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, at Nash’s Farm Store, 4681 Sequim-Dungeness Way in Dungeness.
Once a rare, exotic ingredient, sugar has become a dietary staple. Harrison, an anthropologist and sweets expert, explores sugar’s history from ancient sugar cane plantations to modern candy factories, and details its economic and social significance.
Harrison’s projects include a multimedia online map of bakeries, desserts and candy-makers around Puget Sound.
In communities throughout Washington state, Speakers Bureau presenters give free public presentations on history, politics, music, philosophy, spiritual traditions and more.

Horse, livestock workshops set
The Clallam Conservation District is offering two free pasture renovation and management workshops for horse and livestock owners.
The first is a farm tour from 2-4 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 23, at Bent Gate Farms in Agnew.
The district and the Swanbergs of Bent Gate Farms offer a tour an intensive, pasture-based livestock operation. Learn tips for raising beef, lamb, goats, pork and horses on pasture. Topics include multi-species grazing, rotational grazing, irrigation and soil fertility, pasture grass identification and pasture re-seeding.
The second is a workshop from 10-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, at Coastal Farm and Ranch, 990 E. Washington St. Participants will learn tips to manage pastures to boost forage production, including seasonal pasture management, rotational grazing, fertilizing, liming and over-seeding.
